Qualcomm brings SMS communication to your Android device in an area without carrier coverage

It can take a while for Apple to adopt and apply technology derived from Android manufacturers. On the other hand, when Apple itself brings something new to the table, the Android world reacts promptly. The latest example is the technology that introduced smartphone connectivity to satellites, which Apple presented in the latest iPhone 14 series.

In areas without carrier coverage, the iPhone is able to send SOS messages via satellite, which represents a real revolution in the way we experience mobile devices today. There’s no need to explain the advantages of this technology, but the question is how quickly it will be commercially adopted in the markets around the world since it is currently available only in the U.S. and in a few more countries.

Following in Apple’s footsteps, Qualcomm, a leading chip designer for the mobile market, announced a technology called Snapdragon Satellite. Their latest chipset, Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 will receive the ability to communicate with Iridium satellites in the second H2 2022, and as a result, Android manufacturers can introduce a similar service to the one presented by Apple with the iPhone 14, with the difference that their owners will be able to create messages on the spot, unlike iPhone owners, who can use only predefined ones.

Of course, the fact that this technology will be available does not necessarily mean that every Android device will use it. Namely, it will depend on each individual manufacturer, whether they will offer this kind of service in their models or not.

Expectations may be too high, but it’s logical to assume that this technology will be available in expensive devices. Surely, we still believe Nokia will be among them.
