European Union’s Office for Intellectual Property or EUIPO has granted HMD the design patent for the Nokia 7 plus. The patent goes under the design number 004534600-0001, and we know that is was filed on 4th December 2017. The designer of the device is Alasdair McPhail, HMD’s Head of the Design. Both, Alasdair McPhail and Raun Forsyth are HMD’s Head(s) of Design. Raun is listed as the designer of Nokia 8 Sirocco and he often lends his voice for the product videos.
There are still 7 unique design patents at EUIPO submitted by HMD. If we subtract the expected Nokia 1 and the new 6, as well as the old Nokia 105 and 130, that leaves us with three unannounced devices for which design HMD seeks protection. The last patents HMD submitted were on 2nd and 14th February, and normally 4 to 6 months before a product gets announced, if everything goes smoothly, HMD submits the requests for design patents. That suggests that around IFA18 in September (or maybe earlier) we could expect new devices.
We had a chance to spend some time with the Nokia 7 plus at HMD’s regional event in Vienna last week, and the device left a good first impression on us. The 7 plus is HMD’s first phablet, that is priced around 400 euros and features solid specifications, like Snapdragon 660, 4GB RAM and a 3800 mAh battery. You can check more about it here.
