HMD sold about 20.7 million Nokia feature phones in Q4 2017 *UPDATED*

HMD Global did, what I personally thought was impossible, an U-turn of feature phones sales during 2017. In 2016, Nokia feature phones saw a catastrophic decline of more than 60% from about 90 million shipped units in 2015 to about 35 million in 2016. This year, HMD turned the trend around and achieved remarkable growth of the feature phone shipments in just a year.
From the data Counterpoint Research shared with NokiaPowerUser, we know that HMD shipped about 17.3 20.7 million feature phones in Q4 2017. Keep in mind, this is an estimate by CP and not official numbers. HMD probably won’t release official numbers, because they don’t have to. Maybe when they achieve a significant milestone?
In Q3 2017, Counterpoint reported that HMD shipped 13.5 million feature phones. That gives us roughly 33 million Nokia feature phones sold in the second half of 2017 by HMD Global. We don’t have the precise data for the first half of 2017, so we don’t want to make any predictions if HMD was the top vendor of feature phones in 2017. For that info, we will have to wait a little longer.
Anyhow, bringing feature phones back to growth is a job well done for HMD. With the (rumored) 4G feature phones, this unexpected trend could continue in 2018.
