HERE WeGo available in Huawei AppGallery

The location company HERE, previously a part of Nokia, published its HERE WeGo app in Huawei’s AppGallery appstore for Huawei smartphone users.

HERE WeGo is already available in the Google PlayStore, allowing users to read maps and use the turn-by-turn navigation. HERE, as a brand, was born in 2012, when Nokia re-branded its Nokia Maps solution to HERE. The journey began much earlier. The foundation of HERE is a company called Navteq, that was founded in 1985 and was acquired by Nokia in 2007 for 8.1 billion US dollars. HERE Maps were also known as OVI Maps in some point in the past.

In 2016, Nokia sold HERE to the consortium of German automakers Daimler, BMW and Audi. Intel, Bosch, Continental and Pioneer also invested in HERE and have a part in the ownership. HERE is a strategic company because it is the only true competitor to Google Maps and one of the probable futures of car driving is autonomous driving and for that you need good maps.

Anyways, after a quick throwback to happier times, the news that broke today is that the HERE WeGo app is also available in the Huawei AppGallery. Now, Huawei users that don’t have Google Play services can download the HERE WeGo app directly from the AppGallery and enjoy the turn-by-turn navigation.

I like this move from HERE because having options is always a good thing. Google has a monopoly on smartphone operating system and every effort from other companies to fight that monopoly is a thing worth supporting in my opinion. 🙂
