Android P confirmed for Nokia 8 Sirocco, Nokia 7 plus and Nokia 6 2018

At today’s HMD event where we saw the new Android One smartphones the Nokia 8 Sirocco, Nokia 7 plus and Nokia 6 2018 (global version) announced, HMD and Google declared that they entered a closer partnership. The first new pillar of the partnership is the Nokia 1 – an Android Go smartphone. Android Go is a version of Android 8.1 Oreo with performance improvements that target devices with 512MB or 1GB of RAM. Simpler said, it’s “Lite Android Oreo” so the phones can be usable regardless the low end hardware.

The second (new) pillar of the Google-HMD partnership is HMD’s entrance into Android One. Android One is Android as Google have imagined it – a simple UI with selected pre-installed apps. Alongside security updates and OS upgrade for 2 years, free unlimited high quality storage for photos is included as well. The close Google-HMD relationship was described today on stage by Jaime Rosenberg from Google.

Jaime also confirmed that Nokia 8 Sirocco, Nokia 7 plus, and Nokia 6 2018 (global variant), as part of the Android One program, will be able to upgrade from Oreo to Android P, once P becomes available. HMD didn’t comment on Android P availability for other devices, but they promised last year 2 years of software updates, so P should be included in that period, but we do not have a direct, official confirmation.
