Nokia 5.1 kernel source code released, but what about bootloader unlock?
HMD continues to obligate GPL rules for using Android, under which the company has to release the modifications it made to source code, by publishing the kernel source code for the new Nokia 5.1. HMD still hasn’t release the kernel source codes for all announced devices, but the number keeps growing. Alongside the newly added 5.1, kernel source codes are available for Nokia 1, Nokia 3, Nokia 3.1 and Nokia 8, all of which can be checked at Nokia Mobiles official site here.
On 30th September 2017, HMD’s CPO Juho Sarvikas and CTO Mikko Jaakkola stated in a Twitter conversation that HMD plans to unlock the bootloader on released Nokia Android smartphones. The Companies executives said that bootloader unlocking is in their backlog, meaning they plan to implement it, but have to do more important things first.

Considering that the one year anniversary of that promise is near, it would be nice to know if that option is still in backlog? Even though I’m not interested in such things, there is a critical number of Android users that do customize their phones and like the freedom Android offers, and of course the developer community. Nokia Mobile made the bootloader promise, and it would be fair to know how they stand with that promise now.
Also, the most requested feature on Nokia Community Forums thus far is creating a “Software Recovery Tool” like Nokia had with the Lumia devices, so in case of software problems, the users can without the need of going to a care center (or using other tools and more complicated methods) recover their devices.
