Clear Imaging Research patents to improve Nokia camera software
After Zeiss and Nokia Mobile quietly ended their partnership this year, some imaging software advantages for Nokia phones were needed. The latest Nokia phones kept some of the video and camera software (which was probably co-developed with Zeiss), while the camera app remained unchanged. Recently, a new camera 2.0 was introduced and the X30 received advanced low-light imaging software that improved the quality of images produced by this phone. I could argue that the Nokia X30 is one of the best, if not the best Nokia camera phone produced by HMD Global. Well, the Nokia 9 PV was definitely a king, but its imaging software and hardware were poorly executed.
To bring new energy to its phones, Nokia Mobile has signed a licensing agreement with Clear Imaging Research, an imaging and video technology research and licensing company. I couldn’t find the portfolio that Nokia Mobile is licensing to assess how Nokia phones will benefit from this agreement. However, I did find that Clear Imaging Research has filed suit in Texas against Samsung for infringing on six patents related to image capture and processing in smartphones and tablets. If Samsung uses these patents, Nokia Mobile will benefit. As I recall, however, the Nokia X30 5G uses Samsung camera sensors, so the software it uses to capture and process images probably comes from Clear Imaging Research.
There is a chance that Nokia Mobile’s imaging team is planning on improving the Camera 2.0 app (which is needed!) and the future will show us how this licensing deal has helped.
