Nokia now holds 4000 5G essential patent families

Nokia announced today that the company reached the number of 4,000 patent families that are declared as essential to 5G. In the statement, Nokia also mentioned that its 5G R&D efforts are not stopping there, and the number of patents will grow further. Nokia invested over €130bn since 2000, which is what makes this company a leader in the networking business.

Nokia also helped the 3GPP organization standardize the 5G networks, which are now faster deployed in the markets. New 5G networks are being used to help our smartphones achieve faster internet speeds and will be used in the near future for connected vehicles and cloud robotics. Also, the current patents will be used to set new network standards planned after 5G peaks.

Nokia currently has 20,000 patent families, and each patent family consists of multiple individual patents. Nokia also managed to receive ISO 9001 certification for its high-quality patent portfolio management. This management will help other companies and businesses in easier licensing of Nokia technologies which are done on fair, reasonable and non-discriminatory (FRAND) terms.
