Nokia signs new licensing agreement with Samsung
Nokia just signed a new licensing agreement with Samsung covering the use of Nokia’s innovations related to video standards.

According to the press release, Samsung will be making royalty payment to Nokia for implementing the Finnish giant’s technology on its products. Both parties made the terms of the agreement confidential.
“We are delighted to have reached an agreement with Samsung which further validates Nokia’s decades-long investments to R&D and contributions to multimedia and video technology standards.” said Jenni Lukander, President of Nokia Technologies.
There is no mention of what exact video related-technology is being licensed to Samsung. We can only assume that it may have been one of the video features of the newer Galaxy offerings. However, it is also possible that the newly licensed technology will be implemented in other future Samsung products, and will not just be limited to smartphones.
We tried scanning all video-related patents by Nokia, but its astronomical numbers makes it impossible to really look into each one — about 59,000, and that’s just for video alone.
Nokia accumulated all these technology contributions to multimedia and video research in the course of over 30 years, and currently, the company remains as one of the key players in video research and standardization. In fact, the works of these amazing Nokia engineers continue to reap numerous international recognitions for the Finnish brand, including four Technology & Engineering Emmy® Awards.
