Nokia opens up VR technologies to partners

In October last year, Nokia Technologies announced that they are stopping the development of Nokia OZO camera hardware and shifting focus to licensing VR technology. About 300 people departed from Nokia thanks to this business decision, that Nokia explained as a consequence of slower-than-expected development of the VR market.

Now, Nokia did another step in their new plan, after licensing OZO Audio to HMD, and offered licenses for their other OZO products. In a Jolla-like story, former Nokia Technologies employees that worked on OZO founded a new company called Imevo and Nokia licensed the OZO Live software to them so they can keep on developing it. Company Wowza got the “OZO Deliver” specifications “to allow industry partners to support best-in-class VR experiences with viewport adaptive streaming.”

Another thing that came out from OZO, as Nokia mentioned in their OZO Blog, is that they made significant contributions to standardization of VR formats and they will continue to do so in 2018.
